ENGLISH PRIDE.

My English Pride,
I will not hide.
The English race,
I wont disgrace.
My English blood,

And English people,

Through thick and thin,
Until I die,
My ENGLISH PRIDE,
Stands so high.

The Conservative right winger, Enoch Powell, (MP for Wolverhampton South West) makes a hard-hitting speech saying Britain had to be mad to allow in 50,000 dependents of immigrants each year and calling for an immediate reduction in immigration attacking the government's immigration policy at a Conservative association meeting in Birmingham.

Enoch Powell's so-called "Rivers of Blood" speech led to him being sacked from the shadow cabinet, but made him very popular with tabloids and thousands of workers who staged strikes and marches in support of his views and touched a nerve ending for many who thought the current Immigration laws should be tightened up.

15th April 1912 - Titanic

On this day, the luxury liner R.M.S. Titanic sinks just two hours after hitting an iceberg in the North Atlantic. When it first left port at Southampton, England the Titanic barely escaped a collision with the steamer New York. The regal ship, which carried 2,200 passengers and crew, was considered the most luxurious ever built and unsinkable. However, just before midnight on 14th April 1912, the Titanic collided with an iceberg about 400 miles from the coast of Newfoundland. Slightly over two hours later, in the early hours of 15th April, the ship sank. The ship was woefully unprepared for such an emergency, with more than 1,500 people dieing aboard the ship as it went down, or freezing to death in the icy North Atlantic waters. Happy Birthday!!

......Sir Jack Brabham.....

...an Australian former racing driver who was Formula One champion in 1959, 1960 and 1966. He was a founder of the Brabham racing team and race car constructor that bore his name.
Brabham was a Royal Australian Air Force flight mechanic and ran a small engineering workshop before he started racing midget cars in 1948. His successes in midgets and Australian and New Zealand road racing events led to him going to the United Kingdom to further his racing career. There he became part of the Cooper Car Company's racing team, building as well as racing cars. He contributed to the design of the mid-engined cars that Cooper introduced to Formula One and the Indianapolis 500, and won the Formula One world championship in 1959 and 1960. In 1962 he established his own Brabham marque with fellow Australian Ron Tauranac, which became the largest manufacturer of customer racing cars in the world in the 1960s. In 1966 Brabham became the only man to win the Formula One world championship driving one of his own cars.
Brabham retired to Australia after the 1970 Formula One season, where he bought a farm and maintained various business interests, which included the Engine Developments racing engine manufacturer and several garages. As of 2008, he is the oldest surviving Formula One world champion.

2nd April 1982 - Argentina invades Falklands

The Falkland Islands, a British possession for 149 years, are invaded by Argentina on this day. The British have long claimed the Falklands, based on their discovery by British navigator John Davis in 1592, but they have also been claimed and occupied at various times by Spain, France and Argentina. For several decades, Argentina petitioned the United Nations for possession of the Falkland Islands but Britain refused to comply, leading Argentine dictator General Leopoldo Galtieri to order a full-scale invasion. After diplomatic efforts failed, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher responded with force and Britain's armed forces overwhelmed the Argentines within six weeks. During the Falklands War, Britain lost five ships and 256 lives before regaining the islands and Argentina lost its only cruiser and nearly 750 lives. In 1989, the approximately 2,000 residents of the Falkland Islands reaffirmed their allegiance to Britain by rejecting a pro-Argentina political party.

1st April 1918 - RAF

...the Royal Air Force (RAF) is formed with the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service. At the outbreak of the First World War, Germany took the lead in air strategy and England suffered bombing raids and frustration in the skies against German flying aces such as Manfred von Richthofen, The Red Baron. However, by the war's end, the RAF had gained air superiority along the Western Front. Two decades later, the courage and effectiveness of the RAF would prove legendary during the Battle of Britain, thwarting Adolf Hitler's invasion plans for Britain despite being outnumbered by the German air force.
