The Soviet Union launches the first animal into space, a dog named Laika, aboard the Sputnik 2 spacecraft. Laika, part Siberian husky, lived as a stray on the Moscow streets before being enlisted into the Soviet space program. Laika survived for several days as a passenger in the USSR’s second artificial Earth satellite, kept alive by a sophisticated life-support system. Electrodes attached to her body provided scientists on the ground with important information about the biological effects of space travel. She died after the batteries of her life-support system ran down. At least a dozen more Russian dogs were launched into space in preparation for the first manned Soviet space mission, and at least five of these dogs died in flight. On 12th April 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to travel into space aboard the spacecraft Vostok 1. He orbited the Earth once before landing safely in the USSR.

Radio dramatist Orson Welles and members of his company, caused mass hysteria and frightened tens of thousands of listeners causing people to flee from their homes and praying for salvation when the adaptation of H.G. Wells play, War of the Worlds was aired on CBS Radio. The dramatization was so good people mistook the play for newscasts which caused the panic. Its realism convinced many listeners that beings from another planet have landed on earth.

Joke time........
Two nuns, Sister Catherine and Sister Helen, are travelling through Europe in their car.
They get to Transylvania and are stopped at a traffic light.
Suddenly out of nowhere, a tiny little Dracula jumps onto the hood ofthe car and hisses through the windshield.
"Quick, quick!" shouts Sister Catherine. "What shall we do?"
"Turn the windshield wipers on. That will get rid of the abomination," says Sister Helen.
Sister Catherine switches them on, knocking Dracula about, but he clings on and continues hissing at the nuns.
"What shall I do now?" she shouts.
"Switch on the windshield washer. I filled it up with Holy Water at the Vatican," says Sister Helen.
Sister Catherine turns on the windshield washer. Dracula screams as the waterburns his skin, but he clings on and continues hissing at the nuns.
"Now what?"shouts Sister Catherine.
"Show him your cross," says Sister Helen.
"Now you're talking," says Sister Catherine.
She opens the window and shouts, "Fuck off!"
